Charting A New Course

Mercator charting has always been the defining task required by marine navigation. Proficiency in this skill set is extremely critical to your overall success as a Navigator. Already a requirement to complete the plotting examination with a minimum passing score of 90% at U.S. Coast Guard Regional Exam Center (REC) locations throughout the USA.

License levels of Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) and Master Upgrade, formerly requiring a passing score of 70% or greater, have now been changed to meet the same competency as other license grades for Merchant Marine Officers, as of July 1, 2018.

WOW... That is not a misprint, but a fact. Private maritime license training schools that offer these courses are in process of changing to comply with this upgraded standard and course of instruction, in preparation to meet the challenge. Given this new regulation, mandated by the National Maritime Center, the Chart Plot module of the license examinations will take on a very new, profound urgency of understanding before taking the test, especially for those mariners that have never used a nautical chart previously.

There is a way to successfully complete the regiment of learning how to plot on a paper chart. Work with a subject matter expert, tutorial, personal or blended online. An experienced professional who has the exact background needed to assist you in successful completion of this sometimes daunting undertaking. There are numerous videos and written articles that can be found on the internet to also help achieve mastery of this discipline, none so effective as live interaction, in-person or live webinar, with a USCG Approved Instructor, Assessor, Examiner, and Course Developer.
